Research

Inspired by Microsoft Research's work with multi-world testing and the potential for ML/AI to apply extreme personalization at scale for health interventions, I started a PhD in Applied AI focused on behavioral health interventions.

I spun out an AI company based on research, was a visiting researcher and review research.

Positions and Degrees

  • Visiting Researcher at the University of Cambridge's Behavioral Health Lab

  • Reviewer for The New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst focused on AI and ML applications

  • Masters of Research from the University of Cambridge, PhD work started (put on hold to launch Hew.ai)

  • Masters in Business Administration from Duke University (Klopman Scholar)

Papers

  • Improving Weight Loss Adherence: A Machine Learning Approach to Personalized Chatbot Interventions

  • Using Qualitative Chatbot Messaging Content to Understand Anxiety and Hope Causation During Covid-19

  • Using Chatbots to Measure Wellbeing During Covid-19

  • SMS Text Agents with Healthy Food Delivery to Improve Healthy Eating

Hew.ai and Cambridge Analytica

  • The algorithm utilized by Cambridge Analytica was developed in my department. The original algorithm was legitimate and innovative work, done with consent by Alexsandr Kogan. My work with the algorithm involved licensing it as part of Hew.ai. Hew.ai enabled users to give consent to guess their personality based on their profile (using the algorithm) so that it could personalize the way it supported them with health support.

  • Hew.ai was a company that was spun out of my research. We showed that highly individualized personal support could improve adherence dramatically. Our largest study showed an improvement with meal logging by 85% above a leading weight loss app.
